Are you a dedicated altar guild member but have limited means, so attending a national meeting seems daunting? Do you live in a diocese or a province where there is no altar guild group beyond your own church with which to meet and share ideas and problems? (This is quite typical — only a handful of dioceses have strong altar guilds and very few have provincial meetings; Provinces IV, VII and VIII are exceptions.)

If this describes you, you are an ideal candidate for a NAGA scholarship, which can help you attend our Triennial meeting in Austin, TX, during the General Convention of The Episcopal Church. NAGA supports Convention by serving as the altar guild for Eucharist. As a scholarship recipient you will be asked to assist at least once. The experience of communicating 5,000 people in 15 minutes or so is a tour de force of organization and requires all of one’s altar guild skills. It is an experience from which you will learn and grow.

NAGA will provide a minimum of four scholarships in 2018. These include a shared room, and registration for the NAGA meeting and any workshops with additional fees. How to raise funds to travel and for meals and incidentals? Here you have many options. The first would be to talk with your own parish and see how they can help — maybe someone will donate air miles or perhaps there is a discretionary fund. You also have a bit over a year to save what you can of your own funds. And don’t be shy about asking your bishop for help, many are willing to sponsor an individual’s attendence at a NAGA meeting. Attending NAGA will give you a network of others from across the church with similar interests, problems, concerns.
